Lipitor (Atorvastatin) is a prescribed cholesterol lowering medication of the class known as HMG-CoA Reductase Inhibitors. The usual starting dose is 10mg to 20mg once daily. It is not considered safe in pregnancy. Liver function should be checked with blood tests before starting therapy, again at the 12 week point of therapy, and periodically thereafter. It should not be given in pregnancy, in those with active liver disease, or those with persistently elevated liver transaminases (liver enzymes). Lipitor is metabolized by the cytochrome P450 enyme, so those drugs which inhibit this enzyme (certain macrolides like erythromycin, certain antifungals, cyclosporine, and grapefruit) are likely to prolong the activity of this drug in the blood stream, increasing the risk of myopathy (muscle disease). Increased risk of both myopathy and rhabdomyolysis if given concurrently with niacin (a vitamin commonly taken to lower cholesterol) or a fibric acid agent.
