Levaquin (Levofloxacin) is an antibiotic medication of the quinolone class of medications. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic used to treat susceptible infections, including acute maxillary sinusitis, acute bacterial exacerbations of chronic bronchitis, either nosocomial (hospital acquired) or community acquired pneumonia, urinary tract infections, pyelonephritis (kidney infections), chronic prostates, and skin infections. It is not considered safe in pregnancy or nursing. It should be avoided in children unless absolutely necessary due to potential cartilage toxicity. It has been associated with tendon rupture (especially in the elderly and patients on corticosteroids), phototoxicity, QT interval prolongation, CNS toxicity and hypersensitivity. Important drug interactions occur with antacids, iron, zinc, magnesium, sulcrafate, cimetidine, cyclosporine, phenytoin, theophylline and anticoagulants. The usual dose is 250-500mg once daily. IV and oral doses are considered equivalent. The dose should be reduced in renal impairment.
