K-Dur (Potassium Chloride) is a prescription potassium supplement. It is not considered safe in pregnancy or nursing. It is used for the treatment and prevention of hypokalemia (low potassium) and for the treatment of diurectic induced hypokalemia. It should be taken (contraindicated) in patients with hyperkalemia (high potassium), chronic renal disease, acute dehydration, heat cramps, severe tissue destruction, adrenal insufficiency, familial periodic paralysis, acidosis, alkalosis. It may cause hyperkalemia with ACE inhibitors, spironolactone, triamterene, amiloride, and potassium-containing salt substitutes. Adverse reactions include hyperkalemia, GI discomfort and irritation, diarrhea, and rash. Esophageal and GI ulceration, bleeding, obstruction, and perforation have also been associated with its use. The usual starting dose is 10-20mEq (milliequivalents) once daily.
