Glucophage (Metformin) is a prescription medication from the oral hypoglycemic class of drugs known as biguanides. It is prescribed for blood sugar control in diabetics.
The usual starting dose in 500mg once daily. If taken with insulin the insulin dose must be adjust (lowered). Glucophage should not be taken in patients with renal disease or impairment or in patients with congestive heart failure requiring treatment with medication. Do not use with iodinated contrast agents or for 48 hours after contrast.
Certain cationic drugs eliminated by the kidneys (tagamet, zantac, digoxin, trimethoprim, procainamide, and quinidine) and furosemide and nifedipine may increase metformin levels. Alcohol worsens glucophage's effect on lactic acid. Excess alcohol, sulfa drugs, and insulin increases the risk of low blood sugar (hypoglycemia). Generally considered safe in pregnancy.
