Flagyl (Metronidazole) is a prescribed medication in the class known as antiparasitics. It is used for a variety of parasitic and anaerobic medical conditions including acute amebic dysentery, amebic liver abscess, trichomoniasis, bacterial vaginosis, H. pylori eradication, anaerobic bacterial infections, giardia, pelvic inflammatory disease (STD), clostridium difficile diarrhea, preparation for colorectal surgery. The usual dose is 500-750mg 3 times daily. The dose in pediatrics is weight-based. It is considered safe in pregnancy but not in nursing. It can cause peripheral neuropathy if used chronically. It can cause a psychotic reaction if used with disulfiram and should not be taken within two weeks of disulfiram. It can cause violent emesis and wretching if taken with alcohol. Alcohol must be avoided during therapy with Flagyl, and for 3 days after therapy has been completed. It interacts with barbiturates, lithium, and phenytoin, and increases INR when used with warfarin.
