Diflucan (Fluconazole) is a prescription medication of the azole antifungal class. It is used to treat oropharyngeal, esophageal, vaginal and systemic candidiasis, and cryptococcal meningitis. It is not recommended is pregnancy or nursing. The usual adult dose is 150-400mg once daily depending on the condition being treated. In children the dosages are weight based but, like adults, are given once daily. Liver function tests should be monitored and therapy discontinued if liver disease or a worsening rash develops. This drug potentiates (increases the strength of) warfarin, theophylline, and oral hypoglycemics, and may increase serum levels of phenytoin (dilantin), cyclosporine, zidovudine, and sulfonylureas. Thiazide diuretics (eg. HCTZ) increase fluconazole levels. Tagamet (Cimetidine) and rifampin may decrease fluconazole levels. Hepatotoxicity (liver damage) and exfoliative dermatitis occur rarely.
