Coreg (Carvedilol) is a non-selective beta blocker and alpha-1 blocker used for the treatment of hypertension and congestive heart failure. It is also used to reduce the risk of cardiovascular mortality after heart attacks with residual left ventricular function less than 40%. The usual initial dose is 3.125mg once daily for CHF. Post MI---usual dose is 6.250mg twice daily. It is not generally considered safe in pregnancy or nursing. It should not be used in the setting of cardiogenic shock or decompensated heart failure requiring intravenous inotropic therapy, asthma, 2d or 3d degree atrioventricular block, sick sinus syndrome, or severe bradycardia (unless paced), or hepatic impairment.
