Bextra (Valdecoxib) is a prescribed medication used for the treatment of primary dysmenorrhea (painful menstrual periods) and both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. It has recently been pulled of the market by the FDA for possible increased risk of myocardial infarction (heart attack). It is contraindicated in sulfonamide or aspirin allergy and 3d trimester of pregnancy. It is generally considered unsafe in any portion of pregnancy or in nursing mothers. Several warnings, in addition to the FDA warning on increased risk of heart attack, include Stevens-Johnson Syndrome, toxic epidermal necrolysis, exfoliative dermatitis, erythema multiforme & anaphylactoid reactions. The usual dose for arthritis treatment was 10mg once daily; the treatment for primary dysmenorrhea was 20mg twice daily, but the risk of heart attack was thought to be dose related at these higher doses.
