Avandia (Rosiglitazone) is a prescribed diabetes medication for treating type 2 diabetes. It can be used alone or in combination with metformin, insulin, or sulfonylureas; however, it should not be with metformin in a setting of renal impairment. It is not considered safe in pregnancy or nursing. Neither is it approved in children under 18 years old. The usual dose is 4mg once daily or divided into 2mg taken twice daily. It may cause edema, weight gain, new congestive heart failure, or worsen existing congestive heart failure. Monitor liver function tests before initiating therapy and periodically thereafter. Discontinue if ALT (a particular liver function test) increases to more than 3 times the upper limit of normal. Ovulation may occur in previously anovulatory premenopausal women so contraception is recommended.
