Adalat (Nifedipine) is a prescribed medication of the class known as calcium channel blockers. It is used for control of hypertension and also preterm labor. It is not generally considered safe in pregnancy and should be prescribed by a qualified OB/GYN physician. It is considered safe in nursing mothers. The usual starting dose is 10mg 3 times daily in the regular preparation and 30mg once daily of the extended release preparations. For preterm labor the initial loading dose is 10mg orally every 20-30 min as long as contractions persist, up to a total loading dose of 40mg. It potentiates other blood pressure (antihypertensive) medicine and digoxin. It is potentiated (strengthened) by cimetidine (tagamet). On rare occasions it can worsen angina (chest pain) and heart failure.
